Canon

Canon, a world leader in imaging technology, is pleased to announce two models in the new CanoScan LiDE Series of CIS¹ scanners that offers users the benefit of improved product design and improved technology features. The CanoScan LiDE 20, an ultra slim 600dpi scanner aimed at the home user The CanoScan LiDE 30 with 1200dpi featuring ultra slim design with a stylish aluminium finish

Previously, Canon classified scanner products with the letters 'D' (CCD models) and 'N' (CIS models). By adopting the new name 'LiDE' (LED Indirect Exposure), Canon differentiates between CIS scanners and CCD scanners and draws attention to the benefits of Canon's own LiDE technology.

The CanoScan LiDE 20 is a 600x1200dpi resolution scanner with 48 bit colour depth delivering high image quality together with stylish design. This is the perfect scanner for entry level users and first time buyers. Featuring 3 'EZ' buttons, simple plug n' play via USB 2.0 Full Speed connection, and able to scan multiple photos in a single pass, this is Canon's champion 600 dpi model.

The new CanoScan LiDE 30 is a 1200x2400 dpi resolution, 48bit colour scanner combining outstanding design and great image quality. The CanoScan LiDE 30 has all the features of the LiDE 20 plus an aluminium finish lid and double the optical resolution, making it suited to users with mainstream scanning requirements who also want stylish and high quality computer peripherals.

Style and design

'LiDE' is an advanced scanning technology developed and brought to market by Canon. LiDE allows substantial reduction in the number and size of individual components needed to produce a scanner, without compromising performance or quality. This is achieved via the use of an ultra small, low power LED light source and the integration of optics (lens elements) directly onto the scanning sensor. Traditional CCD devices require large fluorescent lamp light sources and a series of mirrors and lenses to focus light onto the scanning sensor.

LiDE scanners are extremely compact, generate very low noise levels and require tiny amounts of power so that only a USB connection is required to power the device. LiDE scanners offer one connection plug and play.

The benefits of LiDE technology have allowed Canon designers to create extremely stylish, functional products that are as desirable for their looks as for their performance. LiDE scanners give the world's smallest desktop footprint and can even be stored and used vertically on the desk, using the in-box scanner stand. The design of the LiDE 20 and 30 has been further refined from previous CIS models, including refreshed colours, sleek integrated hinges and even thinner base sections.

Scanner simplicity

No AC Adapter
3 EZ Buttons
Advanced Z-lid

As LiDE scanners are USB bus powered, no AC adapter is required and the LiDE 20 and 30's USB 2.0 Full Speed interfaces ensure fast operation as well as simple connection and set-up.

Three EZ buttons - scan, copy and email - located on the front of the scanners, bring further ease of use. By one touch of the buttons, frequently used operations can be accomplished in fewer steps. The EZ buttons are programmable allowing many processes to be automated, including a new 'Scan to PDF' function that generates PDF files directly from hard copy originals.

The innovative Z-lid with its spring-loaded hinge makes it easy to scan bulky books or magazines, pressing them flat against the scanning surface to ensure high quality results.

Technology

QARE version 2 (Quality Auto Retouch and Enhancement)
Fast Multi-photo Mode

QARE automatically removes minute dust particles and scratches from scanned photographs. QARE version 2.0 improves the quality of retouching, delivering better scans, even from damaged originals.

Fast Multi-Photo mode allows quick and easy scanning of many photos in a single operation. Up to 10 originals can be scanned at once, generating individual image files - perfect for creating online photo albums or when archiving photo's onto CD-ROM. This feature is improved from previous versions by scanning all the data in a single pass, greatly reducing overall scan time.

Software & Compatibility

Each of the new CanoScan LiDE models come with a powerful and fully featured software package. Bundled software includes:

Comprehensive driver and toolbox software - Canon's ScanGear CS enables the user to simply perform whatever operation is required with the selection of just one icon on a menu bar. For example, scan to directly to a printer to make copies or scan directly to email attachments or faxes.
Arcsoft PhotoStudio (PC/Mac) - a flexible image editing programme allowing tasks such as colour adjustment, adding text and album storage/retrieval functions.
Omnipage SE OCR (PC/Mac) - a powerful optical character recognition application that allows scanned text to be converted into recognisable text characters/data by the computer.
The CanoScan LiDE 20 and CanoScan LiDE 30 are compatible with Windows 98, 2000 Pro, ME, XP and Mac OS9.0 or later, OS X (v10.1 or later).

Nationwide Mortgages Shropshire

In the first week of voting, the former double Olympic 400 metres silver medallist Roger Black, M.B.E, is encouraging Nationwide members to use their vote in the Nationwide AGM this year and raise money for Disability Sport Events. Roger Black posed for photos at this year's British Open Athletics Championships in Manchester with medal winners (see link to images below).

Roger Black, former Olympic 400 metres silver medallist said: "As we approach the 2012 Paralympics in London, it is essential that we encourage participation in disability sports right through from
grassroots to elite athletes. I hope that Nationwide's 10p donation for every vote cast in its AGM will prompt members to help DSE continue its good work and help many more young people become champions. So the message to Nationwide members is clear - your vote helps disabled athletes, so please use it."

Over 6.6 million Nationwide members will be receiving their voting packs over the next few days and have until 16 July to cast their vote by post or online.

For the second consecutive year, Nationwide Building Society is aiming to raise £100,000 to help disabled athletes. The Society will donate 10p for every vote cast in its 2007 AGM to disabled athletes via Disability Sport Events (DSE). The Society is targeting a minimum of one million members to use their vote, which would generate the £100,000 for DSE, a huge boost for the UK's disabled sports people.

This initiative is one of a range designed to encourage as many members as possible to vote which also sees Nationwide introduce online voting for the very first time.

directors of the Society. Members can also indicate how they want their vote to be cast on any resolutions that are proposed and they can either do this by appointing a proxy or attending the AGM in
person. Voting gives eligible members a real opportunity to have their say in the running of their Society and can be done by post, on-line at www.nationwide.co.uk or at any Nationwide branch.
Members are also invited to attend the AGM which will be held in Birmingham at the ICC at 11am on Thursday 19 July. Nationwide will announce how many members voted and therefore details of the
donation to DSE on the 19 July.

Nationwide Building Society is the world's biggest building society and has assets in excess of £137 billion. It is the UK's second largest savings provider, fourth largest mortgages shropshire lender and seventh largest high street financial organisation.

Brother Fax

Mike Dinsdale, communications director for Brother fax UK says rumours of the death of brother fax have been greatly exaggerated. When computer systems crashed last week at the Department of Work and Pensions workers had to resort to brother fax machines to maintain communications. Unions have called the event the biggest computer failure in public sector history. Mike Dinsdale says: "Though brother fax technology has long since passed its 20th birthday, it has a tenacity and resilience that means it keeps going when things go wrong with web-based communications. And now that all-in-one business machines, which include brother fax, print, copy and scan functionality, are being taken seriously by consumers and businesses alike, it looks like there’s life in brother fax technology yet.

Brother Fax

Brother UK has merged its brother printer and brother fax divisions into one headed up by Phil Jones as non-executive sales director. The company says it will now adopt a channel rather than a product-based sales structure. The restructure has resulted in six redundancies including Keith Whittle, general manager of the printer division. The company says that those made redundant have either been offered alternative positions or are being supported in seeking alternative work. At the end of this month, managing director Ted Nicholls is to retire and Hiroshi Suzuki will take over the MD role for Brother UK

Ink Cartridges

Research company MPA International has published its first study of the Bulgarian office ink cartridges products (OP) market, in association with OPI. The new report, The Bulgarian Office Products Market 2003-8, is a companion survey to the three studies of the OP markets in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic which MPA published earlier this year. A similar study of the Romanian ink cartridges market will also be available by the end of November. Managing director Martin Wilde says there is a great deal of interest in Eastern Europe ink cartridges, both as a user market and as a manufacturing base. "And with these countries poised both on the brink of EU membership and on a massive potential ink cartridges growth curve, it is vital that the potential of each of these markets is well documented and understood. Our intention is to extend our coverage to all Central and Eastern European ink cartridges markets so that manufacturers and distributors have the data they need to formulate their investment strategies in this dynamic region effectively. Our Bulgarian ink cartridges study is another major step along this road.

Projectors

As part of a recent restructuring of its distribution strategy, Sony has appointed Midwich as its UK distributor. Midwich will be stock the full range of commercial and consumer projectors and will be expected to create demand in stronghold sectors such as SME, corporate and education. Darren Lewitt, divisional director at Midwich says: "Looking from the outside it's been quite obvious to us that Sony needed a proactive distributor to kick start its business within a number of channels. Unfortunately, there are not many focused AV distributors around who can service both AV and IT resellers." Midwich says the move could lead to it becoming the UK's largest projector distributor at some point in 2005. It now stocks six out of the seven major Japanese projector brands.

Midwich supplies products to the UK through companies and websites like www.shopuk.co.uk
